BEST IN SHOW

Ghost Walker, close up. Sculpture by James Miller of an octopus balanced gracefully on only 2 legs
James Miller

Ghost Walker, by James Miller 9 x 14 x 17 inches, bronze

From the artist, "bronze sculpture of octopus rising up from seeded to walk on 2 feet."

The fluid motion of this evokes the idea and feeling of water without making a literal representation of it. We love this for the power of it as well as for its delicate detail. That speaks to the idea of balance that the sculpture portrays as the octopus is elegantly (if also a little eerily) posed in motion on only two of its eight legs.

Take a good look at the detail on the back side of the sculpture.

*We are awaiting information on where else to view this artist's work.

OVERALL RUNNER UP

Dunja Tessarek, Hide and Seek, acrylic painting of a crocodile camoflaged in water
Dunja Tessarek

Hide and Seek, by Dunja Tessarek 90 x 70 cm, Acrylic on canvas

From the artist, "Even when painting this picture it was a constant search and find. In this image, the crocodile almost merges with its surroundings. Its head is visible just below the surface of the water, while the reflections of leaves and branches make it appear almost invisible. Sometimes it's worth a second look!"

The color transitions here are subtle transitions punctuated and almost overwhelmed by the intense contrast of the reflected leaves. The magic of this painting is in the artist's will to leave out visual information in service to the purpose of the piece. The "Hide and Seek" message was more important than painting every detail perfectly. The artist stayed true to that and created something wonderfully unique, captivating, and complex.

ARTIVISM AWARD

Melissa Paxton, Sea Change, painting of a baby sea turtle at the edge of an encroaching oil spill in vibrant colors
Melissa Paxton

Sea Change, by Melissa Paxton 60 x 60 inches, Acrylic on Canvas

From the artist, "An oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico slowly degrades into a beautiful but deadly floating rainbow as it comes closer to a small sea turtle."

It is obvious what does not belong in this painting of the sea. The natural oceanic colors blend with those of the baby sea turtle. They belong together and exist in harmony. The overly vibrant colors of the oil spill are pointedly out of place. Even the paint handling shows a sort of menace in those angry shapes that don't quite cooperate with the water. It's a high-impact, emotional piece.
