Meet Guest Juror, Doug Stewart

Artist, Doug Stewart
Doug Stewart

Doug Stewart works in soft pastels, creating energetic and bold art that spans a wide range of subject matter. He has a fine art degree from Kent State University. While there, he worked with a variety of art mediums and found a deep interest in art history.

That interest in art history profoundly affects his art, writing, "I am inspired by Edward Hopper's intimate interior scenes and the energetic color and shapes by Stuart Davies. Or, the poetic and haunting beauty of a John Peto still-life with his Pathos of the Discarded themes."

Doug is also an Associate Fellow at the Pastel Society of America and member of various pastel societies throughout the United States. He is also a guest lecturer at various art guilds in North Carolina. His work hangs in corporate and private collections throughout the United States.

Artist Statement

I seek ordinary subject matter that goes largely

unnoticed but exploits an extraordinary aspect or point of view to engage the viewer.

I use soft pastel on sanded paper because it offers a tremendous range of textures and goes on dry.

My goal is to challenge the status quo and portray the boring and banal as heroic with expressive marks and energy.
