WINGS 2024, International Juried Art Exhibition

Nearing the Light, by James Talbot. Exquisite bead work wings in multicolors
Nearing the Light, by James Talbot

Congratulations to all the artists of WINGS 2024! This year is our 3rd year for this virtual exhibition, and art keeps astounding us!

We invite you to enjoy our jurors' selections. Mediums range from unbelievably intricate beadwork to printmaking, painting, glass work, mixed media, and more. Subject matter is all about wings, but varies inside that theme to include the beauty of flight, environmentalism, mysticism, and so very much more. We are thrilled with the breadth of work submitted by these skillful artists.

It is the goal of Wild Heart Gallery to support and promote animal and wildlife artwork in a wide range of genres and styles.

Artwork for this exhibition was selected by jury based on theme, originality, skill, and quality of work. Jurors were Sarah Soward, Sharon Eisley, E.C. Kanko, and Allison Luci.

Awards: Best in Show, Overall Runner Up, Artivism Award, Overall Honorable Mentions, and Finalists.

BEST IN SHOW

Nearing the Light, by James Talbot. Close up of beadwork and butterfly antennae on multi colored wings wall art
James Talbot

Nearing the Light, by James Talbot 35 x 39 x 3 inches (HxWxD), Glass seed beads, stained wrought iron, brass, layered fabric, welded steel armature.

From the artist, "A loose impression of a light-seeking moth gave rise to this wall-hung sculpture. The base is quilted fabric on a warped steel frame, and carpeted with appliqué, wrapped, and densely-fringed beads. Stained wrought iron feelers and hooks grow through glass thickets. The edges are single strands and clusters of bead fringe with hand-colored thread tails, and handmade brass beads bind the clusters."

Intricacy and precision meet the exhibition's theme and the spirit of originality we crave. Moths of amazing colors exist. The idea that the spectrum of visible light (to humans) is incorporated into the wings of this fabric sculpture is deeply gratifying layer of meaning. Color choices and color transitions are full of thought. The muted brass against the vibrant rainbow is purposeful and striking.

OVERALL RUNNER UP

Re-Tired Raven, by Cindy Chinn. Sculpture of a raven made of tire treads riding an upside down unicle
Cindy Chinn

Re-Tired Raven, by Cindy Chinn 49 x 33 inches (WxH), Recycled Bicycle tires, inner tubes, and parts

From the artist, "The Raven is crafted entirely from discarded bicycle tires and mounted atop an old bicycle rim. This piece, the signature work of the collection, depicts a magnificent raven emerging triumphantly from the tire, reborn and revitalized."

Excellent use of materials! We love the attention to detail and anatomy, combination of textures, and humor amid the topic of reuse-recycle-repurpose. It looks as if the raven is destroying the tire to make itself, giving us a layer of story (or maybe more than only one layer of story) to consider,

ARTIVISM AWARD

Cast Your Fate to the Moon, by MaryBeth Garrigan. Painting of birds flying at night with stars, constellations, and snow
MaryBeth Garrigan

Cast Your Fate to the Moon, by MaryBeth Garrigan 60 x 48 inches, Acrylic on Canvas

From the artist, "Featuring the importance of Dark Skies for Bird Migration"

We love the mix of Pop Art and Contemporary Wildlife Art in this. The way the city lights consume the migrating birds in a web of dots that confuse the patterns they intend to follow is beautiful, haunting, and tragic. This is a striking reminder to check out your local "Lights Out" initiatives to help migrating birds on their journey.
